Shocked

My parents took a lot of family videos. The highlights of Townsend family holidays, birthdays, sporting events, and a wide range of normal days are collected on VHS tapes on a shelf in the family office. We used to watch them on Sunday nights. One famous phrase, advice from my parents, was heard more often than any other. When one of us would fall down, trip on something, or otherwise accidentally hurt ourselves, my mom or dad would reply something to the effect of, “Oh no! Are you okay? Shake it off.” It was pretty easy to shake off dirt, or even scraped knees. Other things I’ve found, are a little tougher to shake off.

Some days feel longer than others. They drag, and my mood seems to drag with them. I woke up one day earlier this week and just felt it. It was going to be a rough one. Before I headed to work I stopped by Jake’s to give him a quick kiss. When I pulled up he came out and sat in the passenger seat of my Subaru Legacy. I went to give him a kiss. Our noses touched, and he shocked me. I was so surprised I pulled my head back a little. Looking at him I tried the kiss again, I was answered with another electric shock. It was starting to bug me. I was already having a tough day. All I wanted was a little kiss. I tried a third time and was answered yet again with a little shock from Jake’s face, on my lip this time. Jake looked at me with his eyes wide, and a tiny scrunched up smile on his lips. He started to laugh and so did I. This went on for a few minutes. I couldn’t seem to kiss or even touch his face without getting a shock, and we couldn’t seem to stop laughing. Finally Jake grabbed my hand and put it on his cheek. It shocked my palm but he held it there and kissed me softly. No shock that time.

Some things are a little harder to shake off than others. During those times, you might need a little shock. Something sudden to surprise you. Mine is Jake. Electrifying kisses must be why I’m so happy.
